Frequently Asked Questions

1.      How do I know which counselor is my student’s counselor?

Currently, Beverly Proffitt is the counselor for 9th and 11th grades, and Emily Cook is the counselor for 10th and 12th grades. However, we work with all students for different circumstances. Feel free to contact either one of us.

 

2.      How can I reach the school counselors?

Please call Graham High School at 276-326-1235 and ask to speak to one of the counselors by name. You can also set up appointments with us if you would like to speak face-to-face. Our hours are 8:00 AM to 3:25 PM.

3.      How do I arrange a conference with a teacher?

We are happy to assist with scheduling conferences with teachers. Feel free to email teachers, as well. All teachers have emails listed on the Graham High School website at ghs.tazewell.k12.va.us.

4.      How do I get Parent Portal information?

A parent or guardian must come to the school and request Parent Portal information in person, due to confidentiality. No Parent Portal information can be given directly to a student or over the phone.

5.      How can I change my child’s schedule?

We work extensively in the spring to try to make all of the schedule correct; however, we are human and can make mistakes. If there is a mistake made on a schedule, forms will be available in the main office for students to fill out and get signed by a parent or guardian during the first ten (10) days of school. Schedule changes will only be made for legitimate excuses such as being enrolled in Spanish II when a student has not taken Spanish I and will not be changed for excuses such as, “I want the same lunch as my girlfriend.” We can only honor valid reasons due to the high number of changes requested in the fall. All requests will be honored on a first come, first served basis. After ten (10) days of school, schedule changes cannot be made without principal’s permission due to extenuating circumstances. According to state law, all other schedule changes made after 10 days will result in a grade of “F” on the official transcript.

 

 

6.      Do you give ACTs or SATs at GHS?

Yes, GHS is now a testing site! Please know that we will fill up quickly, so it is best to sign up early. Please see www.collegeboard.org for more information about registration, dates, times, and other locations.

 

 

7.      How can my child sign up for the ACT or SAT?

Registration for the ACT and/or SAT can be found at www.collegeboard.org. We will gladly assist your student in signing up, but the student will need a form of payment such as a debit or credit card in order to complete the registration.

 

8.      What if I cannot afford the ACT or SAT?

Please see one of the counselors for a waiver. Waivers are available for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and have a completed form on file at the school. 

 

9.      How can I request a transcript?

We are currently transitioning into using the online transcript service called Parchment.  This service is for anyone needing a transcript or verification of graduation.  Please go to www.parchment.com 

 

10.  Is there a list of scholarship and college information?

Yes! Our guidance website is updated frequently with scholarship and college information. We also have several websites listed for SAT and ACT prep. 11.  I have a question about….who should I contact?

As school counselors, we are committed to the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. Please contact us, and we will help as much as we can. We can link you to other resources or to the correct departments, as well.
